Highly paid jobs that pay better than the “highest paying jobs”

Looking for a highly paid career? Here are five jobs that pay better than the “highest paying jobs” in America for 2019.

Be careful about how much stock you put in those lists of highly paid jobs (even though this is one of them).

One such list was recently released featuring supposed “best paid jobs in America for 2019.” And something looked off about it.

It wasn’t shocking to learn that a majority of the jobs were in medicine and healthcare. But one thing I did find puzzling was how low the salaries were. “The highest paid job in America pays just $196,100 a year?” I asked myself. “That doesn’t seem right.”

Despite the fact that there are many of us dream of making that kind of money, it still didn’t seem like a whole lot.

No, the highest paying jobs don’t cap out at $196,000

A little research revealed that the jobs are not, as I suspected, exactly the highest paid out there. In fact, according to online test preparation service, CanadaQBank, the average salary of Canadian doctors (of all types) is $307,482 a year, or more than $100,000 higher than the “highest paying” job.

And, according to another source, there are quite a few jobs that pay significantly more than those listed in the recent survey. The top five of those are:

1 Anesthesiologists – $266,000
2 Surgeons – $251,900
3 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons – $242,700
4 Obstetricians and Gynecologists – $235,200
5 Orthodontists – $229,400

What gives?

I’m not saying these lists are not useful. They are. But one should use them as a resource, take them with a grain of salt, and consider the source. In the most recent case, for example, the source is Glassdoor, which collects salary information from users. The report is based on those numbers. Self reporting is one way to gather information, though said to be not always the most reliable. And there are many others, like government databases and other types of big studies. The method is going the affect the data.

In this case, it’s worth noting that someone who is working as a specialist surgeon and making more than $300,000 a year might not be as likely to be on websites in their spare time filling out their salary information for no particular reason. So, the data may be incomplete.

That said, these lists can still play an important role in your career decisions and in determining whether you are being paid fairly based on the market.

What about the highest paid jobs that are not in medicine?

Since one thing that is consistent across these reports is that the highest paid jobs are always in medicine, we thought we would look at those that aren’t — for those who aren’t likely, for whatever reason, to suddenly decide to go to medical school or similar.

Below are the top 25 highest paid jobs for 2019, as listed on another source, Career Profiles, that are not in medicine or healthcare, along with their annual salaries. They are, for the most part, executive level positions, but they can give you an idea of what industries can lead to well paid positions are you work your way up the ladder.

Career Profiles isn’t the final word on salary information. Nobody is. So, always feel free to so your own research.
